International Tax Planning in the Current Environment

The next IBSA Cyprus discussion group meeting with be held in conjunction with the TMF Group at the Centre of Visual Arts & Research, in the charming old city of Nicosia on 26th January 2017 at 17:30. Join Roy Saunders, Founder and Chairman of IFS Consultants and IBSA, Sara Gunnervik from TMF Cyprus, Dmitry Zapol from IFS Consultants and Neofytos Neofytou from Taxatelier.


The meeting will discuss the implementation of the OECD’s BEPS initiatives in Cyprus, Luxembourg, Netherlands and Malta amongst other countries with reference to the implementation of so-called patent box regimes in these countries.  We will also be discussing treaty access limitations in respect of the double tax treaties entered into by these countries, as well as the effect of the Common Reporting Standard on entrepreneurial clients and their requirement to disclose beneficial ownership of their holding companies.

Neofytos Neofytou is a Fellow Chartered Accountant of England and Wales. Between the years 1984 – 2013 he has been a partner of Ernst & Young and Head of Tax Services of the Cyprus Firm, as well as a partner in the International Tax Services Group of Ernst & Young, a group involved in multinational operations. He served as President of the Tax Committee of the Institute of Certified Public Accountants of Cyprus, of which he has been a member for about 35 years. He also served as President of the VAT Committee of the Institute of Certified Public Accountants of Cyprus.

He is currently a tax advisor to the Institute of Certified Public Accountants of Cyprus advising members on tax issues. He has also participated on behalf of the Institute in contacts with the Ministry of Finance negotiations, the House of Representatives, the Inland Revenue Department and the Cyprus Chamber of Commerce and Industry on tax legislation issues. For the last six years he is also acting as a special advisor to the Minister of Finance on double tax treaties issues and negotiations and tax advisor to the Cyprus Chamber of Commerce and industry.

He has extensive experience in international tax planning, on structuring operations and group structures for international clients in the oil and gas industry, the banking and financial industry, the construction and hotel industry, the manufacturing and service industries etc. and his clients included major local and international groups. He is a frequent speaker on seminars, training courses and conferences on tax planning, substance and transparency issues and application of double tax treaties and exchange of information issues.

Dmitry Zapol is an international tax advisor with practical knowledge of the principles of individual and corporate international taxation and cross-border business planning. He joined IFS in September 2010 after earning his LLM (Tax) degree at King’s College, London. Five years prior to this, Dmitry earned his LLB at Durham University and completed an LPC at the College of Law. Dmitry is a qualified Russian lawyer — he came to the UK from Moscow, where for five years he worked as an associate at Moscow City Bar Association "Barshchevsky & Partners". Dmitry specialised in advising foreign investors exploring opportunities in Russia on corporate tax implications together with Russian and cross-border tax planning. Dmitry holds the Advanced Diploma in International Tax and is studying to become a CTA.
