Matthew Cutts

Matthew Cutts is the co-chair of the Squire Patton Boggs' Strategic Advocacy Public Policy Practice. He draws on his experience in the courtroom and boardroom to provide clients with comprehensive counsel that enables them to achieve their most sought-after federal strategic objectives. With an emphasis on team management and strategy design, his public policy practice is enhanced by his complex litigation background, as well as his executive experience on the boards of directors for several not-for-profit organizations.

Separately, Matthew advises clients on complex civil litigation and criminal cases involving corporate and business activities. His civil litigation practice focuses on business dispute and fraud cases and his criminal cases involve business entities under investigation by state and federal authorities. He also counsels public officials facing Congressional or other federal investigations. Matthew is a member of the firm’s Recruitment Committee.

By Mayoral appointment, Matthew served as the Chairman of the Board of the D.C. Sports and Entertainment Commission, an independent arm of the D.C. government responsible for promoting sports and entertainment events in the D.C. Metro area. The Commission spearheaded the construction of a $600 million baseball stadium for the Washington Nationals Major League Baseball (MLB) franchise.

Matthew plays an instrumental role in several non-profit and community organizations in the Washington area. He serves as Chairman of the Board of the Pearl Coalition, an organization dedicated to the restoration of “The Pearl,” a Chesapeake Bay Schooner that was chartered by free African Americans to help 77 slaves escape to freedom.
Matthew is also a board member of the Washington Nationals Dream Foundation, the philanthropic arm of the Washington Nationals, and a board member of the Greater Washington Sports Alliance, a business organization that promotes sports in the Greater Washington area. He is also active in the Ron Brown Scholar Program, a non-profit organization that provides promising young African Americans with the financial resources to attend some of the finest colleges and universities in the county.

Previously, Matthew served as the senior law clerk to Chief Judge Annice M. Wagner of the District of Columbia Court of Appeals, where he worked on a host of issues ranging from complex Constitutional questions involving the First, Fourth and Fifth Amendments, to the application of the rules of civil procedure. Also, as the senior law clerk, he worked extensively on administrative issues facing Chief Judge Wagner.

Linda Pfatteicher concentrates her practice in international tax and operational structuring, cross-border mergers, acquisitions and post-acquisition integration, and international tax controversies.

Linda's clients range from startups to billion-dollar multinationals. She has assisted clients in a wide variety of industries including, most significantly, high tech, medical devices, entertainment software, manufacturing and distribution, oil and gas, consumer products and venture funds.

Linda has worked with her clients in structuring acquisitions, integrating legal entities, working to optimize the foreign/US tax base (including negotiating and obtaining tax holidays and utilizing low-tax jurisdictions), advising on cross-border financing, managing indirect tax costs and ensuring that the final international structure can efficiently meet both US and non-US compliance requirements. She has advised on large-scale international merger and acquisition transactions as well as tax controversy matters. This work includes disputes related to buy-in and cost sharing agreements and analysis of the impact of corollary effects, such as earnings and profits and foreign tax credits.

Linda also regularly assists clients with developing tax issues, such as the treatment of software-as-a-service revenue, and with issues that may arise under developing tax regimes, such as those of Brazil, Russia, India and China. She has negotiated tax rulings for her clients in the Netherlands, Singapore and Switzerland.
Linda has previously worked for one of the Big Four accountancy firms as well as another top 20 international law firm.

Mitch Thompson is deputy practice group leader of the Squire Patton Boggs Tax Strategy & Benefits practice where he focuses on corporate taxation and international tax matters.

Mitch has extensive experience advising clients on US, non-US and cross-border mergers, acquisitions, dispositions, restructuring, transfer pricing and financing transactions.

Prior to rejoining the firm in 2004, Mitch served for six years as global tax counsel for several automotive businesses at TRW Inc., then a multinational automotive and technology company. While at TRW, Mitch had tax law and planning responsibility for acquisitions, dispositions and joint ventures ranging in value from US$11 million to more than US$1.5 billion. In addition, Mitch oversaw transfer pricing planning and legal compliance for several operating divisions and contributed to key corporate tax initiatives including TRW’s acquisition by the Northrop Grumman Corporation and the subsequent disposition of various business divisions by Northrop.

Since returning to Squire Patton Boggs, Mitch has had lead tax responsibility advising clients on numerous mergers and acquisitions and transfer pricing projects for listed companies, private equity and cross-border funds with an emphasis on complex, cross-border transactions.

Mitch is a Six Sigma Green Belt and co-leader of Squire Patton Boggs’ Legal Project Management initiatives.

After 30 years of practice, he has gained extensive experience in corporate finance and tax matters, securities broker-dealers, investment advisors, investment companies, life insurance companies, hedge funds, medical practice purchases and sales, insurance agencies and bank expansion into insurance and securities fields. His focus is on helping organize start-up companies. Robert also represents a number of closely held businesses in such industries as medicine, dentistry, hospitality, direct mail monitoring and list protection, computer software, insurance agency, securities brokerage, and investment management.
