Join us in London on Thursday 19th January at 18:00 for a discussion group focussed on Corporate Incentives to Employees and Investors at the offices of Frank Hirth, 236 Grays Inn Road, London WC1X 8HB


Join Michael Lewis of Frank Hirth, Nigel Sloam of Nigel Sloam & Co, Robert Field of Farrer & Co and Mike Luckett of Shipleys who will be discussing employee incentive schemes including the EMI scheme and stock option arrangements, employee benefit trusts, disguised remuneration provisions and pension arrangements. The meeting will also discuss investor incentives including EIS and SEIS reliefs, Angel Investor reliefs and Business Investment Reliefs.  UK and potentially different US treatment of profits subject to income tax or capital gains tax will be considered along with valuation and reporting differences.


Networking drinks and canapes follow the discussion and offers the opportunity to meet fellow IBSA members and their guests.

Mike is responsible for the day-to-day running of Shipleys’ two tax departments in London and Godalming. His key focus is on private clients including expatriates and non-UK domiciliaries, more complicated UK tax planning, cross-border tax advice and HM Revenue & Customs tax investigations. As a former HMRC Officer he is well aware of the procedure from the other side of the fence.

Mike previously worked for HM Revenue & Customs before joining a predecessor firm of Shipleys in 1979. He was made a principal in 1998.

He is an Associate member of the of the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England & Wales.

Nigel Sloam

Nigel read Mathematics at Corpus Christi College, Oxford University.  He was trained initially with a major actuarial consultancy, then worked as Actuary and Investment Manager of a large (half British owned) Israeli Insurance Company in Tel Aviv.  His subsequent experience included working as an actuary for subsidiaries of a major merchant banking group and as Technical Director of a leading Investment, Pensions and Insurance Consultancy and in 1979 founded our firm.

He is a Chartered Mathematician.  He is an Associate of the American Society of Actuaries, a full STEP practitioner (TEP) and one of very few actuaries who are members of The International Tax Planning Association.  Nigel is a leading expert on the utilisation of member directed pension schemes for entrepreneurs, executives, professionals, artists and sportsmen and was the first and is the current Chairman of the Association of Consulting and legal conferences and seminars.

He is involved in every area of the firm's work: actuarial, investment, trusteeship, product development, pension and divorce consultancy for both our British and overseas clients.

Michael Lewis

Michael has over 23 years of experience in advising on US and UK private client tax issues.  He provides advice across a broad spectrum of areas including: US and UK interaction on personal income, capital and social security taxes, US gift and estate taxes, UK inheritance tax, and tax-efficient charitable planning. He also has a keen interest in the taxation regarding divorce cases.

Michael is a qualified Chartered Tax Adviser (CTA) and a US Enrolled Agent (EA). Michael won Accountant of the Year in Citywealth’s Magic Circle 2021 Awards. He holds a Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) in Politics from University of Warwick.

Michael has a passion for philanthropy, in terms of personal fund raising via sponsored cycle events, through to his focus on pushing for a reform of the tax system to help develop a bigger culture of giving in the UK. Michael is an avid supporter of donor-advised funds, and speaks regularly on their tax benefits, and how they help energise family gifting. He believes strongly that the tax system should be reformed to encourage more innovative gifting arrangements.

Robert Field is Head of the Tax Team at Farrer & Co. He provides a wide range of tax planning advice to businesses and individuals, both in the UK and internationally, including: the direct and indirect tax aspects of cross border trade, double tax treaty planning, real estate investment and development, holding company structures, investment funds and financial products.

He also handles negotiations and disputes with HM Revenue and Customs, taking cases to tribunal where necessary. His clients include wealthy individuals, charities and financial institutions.
