Dear Lucie

I created the International Business Structuring Association (IBSA) in March 2014 for professional colleagues developing their careers, recognising how difficult it is to generate connections with fellow professionals across the globe who can help them with international client issues.  In order to create the IBSA, I encouraged more established professional colleagues to become members and share their knowledge and experience with colleagues through discussion groups, workshops, conferences and articles – to act as ‘mentors’ to those whose careers may emulate theirs in future years.  And I am truly delighted with how the IBSA has developed over the past two years.....

I do hope that some of my fellow ‘mentors’ will be happy to remain part of the global and local committees, but I am now reaching out to professional colleagues of the next generation to join the IBSA and formulate its global development. We have now held over 40 events, we have members from over 30 countries and we have established four principal branches in North America, the UK, Asia and Continental Europe (where we have sub-chapters in places like Cyprus and Malta) and are opening a Middle Eastern branch in Dubai on 18th October. So, we have done exceptionally well to date but it is now time to share the reins of the IBSA’s development with younger colleagues, whose profiles may be enhanced through their membership of relevant committees and their involvement in the events arranged worldwide by the IBSA.

To remind you, the IBSA is the only multi-jurisdictional, multi-disciplinary Association dedicated to assisting clients with their international business structuring requirements.  It is a not-for-profit Association founded to promote the practice of international business structuring as a transparent, effective and professional discipline. The IBSA has created a community where professionals at all levels learn from each other, with access to worldwide knowledge and contacts, opening up professional and business opportunities for its members. The Association’s members are drawn from a broad range of disciplines, including banking, corporate finance, accountancy, law, intellectual property specialists, corporate service providers and international family offices. IBSA Members also enjoy the benefit of inclusion in our Member and Corporate Directories (depending on level of membership) and exclusive member benefits such as discounts on third party service provision, publication of articles in the IBSA Knowledge Bank and use of the IBSA Connects services.

Now is the time to encourage our younger professional colleagues to join the IBSA and take responsibility for its future, their future, by joining local committees to develop local branches.  We would also welcome new membership of the IBSA global committee to create and achieve the strategic ambitions of the IBSA. If you would like more information about the IBSA and are interested in joining our Association, or if you are already a member but would like to join a local or the global committee, please contact Lucie.Hoyland@istructuring.com .

Kind regards,

Roy Saunders

Conference

Guiding The Development of SME Clients,

18th November 2016, 09:00

The Landmark Hotel, London

The IBSA has been very proud of the quality of speakers and topics at its annual event, the IBSA November conference.  This year it will be held again at the Landmark hotel, London.  The theme of the conference is how a SME develops its international business with the help of those professional advisers engaged in the various issues which they will face – from intellectual property issues to financing arrangements and even the creation of a brand manifesto and digital strategy that will be required in today’s markets.

Expert speakers reflect the range of disciplines which the IBSA recognises are essential for guiding the development of the SME, and are from the US, UK and several Continental European jurisdictions. We have included VAT experts to advise on the pitfalls the SME may face and transactional lawyers to help the SME develop joint ventures, franchising and licensing arrangements with overseas third parties.  Roy and others members will cover the international tax issues they will face, as well as considering potential exit strategies for the entrepreneur behind the SME.

The programme is shown on our website.

Please visit our website for a programme of the day's event.  There are 6 hrs of CPD accreditation for this conference.

THE LIONEL MESSI "IMAGE RIGHTS" CASE

Robert Kiggins, Culhane Meadows

Recently a Spanish Court found the famed Barcelona soccer (football to most of the world) striker, Lionel Messi, and his father, Jorge, guilty of criminal tax fraud. While the Court stopped short of sending either of them to jail, substantial monetary penalties were imposed on the pair.   The case was an image rights transfer gone bad. Read more >>

THE VIEW FROM SHANGHAI: WHAT DOES CHINA MAKE OF BREXIT?

Sam Critchley, ILS World

Amidst the fallout of the United Kingdoms’ referendum vote to leave the European Union, the immediate reaction in China was undeniably one of general pessimism. Both in the state media and throughout the general public’s social media response, the overriding opinion was that the decision was ill-judged and that the impact would be problematic for the economy. A closer inspection of the issues posed reveals a more nuanced situation, however, while there are also a number of reasons to be optimistic about future relations between China and the UK.
