Dear Lucie

Although our newsletters are generally for members only, I am extending this newsletter to our database as we have some interesting events coming up and I don't want you to miss out!

As an IBSA member, attendance to all Discussion Group meetings is free. However, as many of you have expressed interest in the IBSA over the past few years, I would like to invite you, as my guest, to the upcoming discussion groups meetings we have organised - Dubai on 11 th April titled 'Residence Planning for Entrepreneurial Clients' and in London on 3rd May on 'Brexit: Relocating your UK Company'.  Please scroll down for more details about both and to register attendance.

On March 15th, we held our first Transatlantic discussion group meeting titled 'The Trump and Brexit Effect in the US and UK'. It was a fascinating insight into how the US and UK are likely to evolve their tax systems in the coming years, contemplating the proposed tax reform of President Trump in the US, and the Brexit consequences for the UK.  A summary of which is posted on the Knowledge Bank of our website and in the articles section below.  We also held a very successful discussion in Hong Kong, kindly hosted by KPMG, on 22nd March on 'A Practical Guide to Expanding Your Business Through Acquisitions' - please click here to view the presentation slides and a recording of the meeting.

The annual IBSA conference has now been organised for the 16th November at the Landmark hotel in London (a favourite of IBSA members from the poll we have taken and now part of our annual branding!).  The topic is Practical Issues for Entrepreneurial Family Owned Companies and the full programme (albeit in draft format) is shown on the website under conferences .

As per the past two years, we are holding an Annual Members’ Dinner the night before at the private Hall of Fame room at Langan’s Brasserie.  There will need to be a limit to numbers, so please let Lucie know as soon as possible if you would like to reserve a place at the dinner or book directly here .  A new addition to our November programme – I am planning the golf day I have previously hinted at, the day AFTER the conference on Friday November 17th at the world-famous Finchley Golf Club (only joking, but it’s actually my club so I can arrange a good deal, and it has the accolade of Ken Brown saying it is "the best presented golf course for club play that I have seen in years").  So again, all who are interested should drop a line to Lucie and let her know.

As you may be able to tell from this newsletter, the IBSA is really developing into a members’ association designed not only to give professional benefits to our members, but also create a club-like atmosphere at our many events, so that members get to know each other (leading to trusting them with important client work or to obtain reciprocal information which may be valuable to themselves). Our younger professional colleagues can help to develop this by taking responsibility for its future by joining local committees to develop local branches. The IBSA was created in March 2014 for professional colleagues developing their careers, recognising how difficult it is to generate connections with fellow professionals across the globe who can help them with international client issues.  In order to create the IBSA, more established professional colleagues were encouraged to become members and share their knowledge and experience with colleagues through discussion groups, workshops, conferences and articles – in effect to act as ‘mentors’ to those whose careers may emulate theirs in future years.

To this end, I will be holding a workshop to deliver the ‘Polycon’ international tax planning course on 24th June, which will be hosted by our IBSA corporate member Squire Patton Boggs at their London office. It is the new iteration of the programme that I have delivered at the Institute of Advanced Legal Studies (part of the University of London) for several years and which we took to Russia and Cyprus. I am not charging for this workshop, which is geared towards our younger professional colleagues in the spirit of ‘mentoring’ them as above and encouraging them to participate in the growth of the IBSA.  Please scroll down for more details and to register.

I am truly delighted with how the IBSA has developed over the past few years. If you are interested in becoming a member or would like to join a local or the global committee, please contact Lucie.Hoyland@istructuring.com .

Best regards,

International Tax Planning - The Polycon Journey

24th June 2017, 09:00

Squire Patton Boggs, London

Roy Saunders, Chairman of the IBSA, and his IFS Consultant colleague Dmitry Zapol, would like to cordially invite you to a workshop examining the international tax issues relevant to the expansion of the fictitious Polycon Lens Company as it morphs into the multinational Eyemax Corporation throughout its generational journey.  This workshop is being hosted by Squire Patton Boggs at their office at 7 Devonshire Square, London EC2M 4YH on 24 th J une 2017 at 09:00.

The Polycon journey was the basis of Roy’s leading international tax reference book for 30 years, International Tax Systems and Planning Techniques, as well as the MA course in international tax law at the University of London for the past 5 years.  The workshop will start with an explanation of an entrepreneur’s invention developed by the manufacturing entity, the company's overseas expansion with warehousing facilities, representative offices and then sales subsidiaries, corporate acquisitions made to expand the global reach of the company followed by an IPO as the company’s financial requirements dictate for its future growth.  The appropriate holding company regimes, along with financing and licensing techniques will be examined along with investment vehicles for real estate and other fringe activities, with the final stage being the creation of a private equity fund under the newly branded Eyemax umbrella.

There are 4 hrs of CPD accreditation for this workshop.

This workshop carries no charge as it is geared towards our younger professional colleagues in the spirit of ‘mentoring’ and encouraging them to participate in the growth of the IBSA.

The workshop will be followed by lunch kindly provided by Squire Patton Boggs who are sponsoring this event.
